Committee of 70

The Committee of Seventy is a non-partisan, non-profit organization which fights for clean and effective government, fair elections and an informed citizenry in Philadelphia and the region. Founded in 1904 by a handful of committed civic leaders, today Seventy is a leader on issues of elections, government reform and civic engagement. The Committee of Seventy’s staff and its diverse group of volunteer leaders, hailing from prominent businesses, law firms and non-profit organizations give their time, expertise, and influence to promote political integrity and better services for the region’s residents.

It’s only natural that we fight for redistricting reform. As part of our Ethics Agenda introduced during the 2007 Mayoral and City Council elections, Committee of Seventy urged candidates to pledge that — if elected — they would:

Convene a non-partisan and independent citizen’s commission to devise a fair redistricting reform plan that will benefit the citizens of Philadelphia and reduce the conflicts of interest inherent when political district lines are drawn by incumbent elected officials.

Many candidates signed on, including current Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and a number of currently serving City Council members. Seventy will continue to push for a fair redistricting reform plan and we hope the Mayor and City Council Members will keep their promise for reform.
